Jazzing up Chopin
CHOPIN will be played on traditional Chinese instruments, adapted for a song-and-dance show and rearranged into rock and jazz today when Poland celebrates its National Pavilion Day.
There's a packed lineup of entertainment and culture events in the 3,000-square-meter pavilion in Zone C near the pavilions of Germany, France and Switzerland. Performances will also take place at other Expo venues.
The pavilion's exterior is decorated with huge traditional Polish paper-cuts, reminding Chinese of their own paper-cut art that is in common with the Central European country. There's also a magnificent Polish dragon from the country's folklore.
Chopin in many incarnations will be performed.
"Let's Dance Chopin," a 45-minute song-and-dance show, will make its world premiere at 5pm in the Expo Center auditorium.
The Chinese Traditional Music Orchestra from Hangzhou Normal University School of Music will play Polish classical music on traditional Chinese instruments. The program features works by Chopin, Karlowicz, Paderewski and Moniuszko, as well as mazurkas and Polish folk songs.
At 8:30pm in Europe Square, Chopin will be rearranged into rock and jazz. The pavilion also offers events for children.
The Polish Dragon, a major character from folklore, is featured in exhibitions and the dragon will participate in a parade along Bocheng Road starting at noon.
Kids can play traditional Polish puzzle games and assemble jigsaws made from award-winning pictures in a Polish painting contest.
The Rozrywka modern dance group will collaborate with noted director Piotr Jagielski to perform various dance styles, including solo and duo, ballet, modern dance and hip-hop, this afternoon at the Europe Square. They will tell the story of Poland's social and cultural transformation.
