Jewelry outlet robbery raises security issues

A MAN was caught soon after he allegedly stole a ring worth about 3,800 yuan (US$578) from a jewelry outlet inside a supermarket in Chongming County yesterday afternoon.

The suspect surnamed Zhou was caught by security guards and police when trying to escape with the platinum sapphire ring from Hualian Supermarket.

Zhou was pretending to purchase jewelry in the supermarket on Fengbang Road in Changxing Town.

After a store employee showed him the ring, he grabbed it and fled.

He was caught about 300 meters from the supermarket, a witness said.

The robbery follows a gold-snatching case in the city six months ago - both targeted counters in supermarkets.

Three masked men robbed a jewelry store in a hypermarket and stole 3 kilograms of gold last September - they were caught six days later.

Xu Wenjun, secretary general of the business association, said the city plans to draft new regulations concerning jewelry operations. Stores could be fined more than 10,000 yuan if they have ineffective security measures.
