Jiang elected as new Vice Mayor

Jiang Ping, secretary-general of the Shanghai municipal government and director of the government's general office, was elected vice mayor this morning by local legislators.

Jiang, 54, a native of Zhejiang Province, started his political career as the secretary of Shanghai Politics and Law Committee and was appointed the government secretary-general in 2008.

"I now deeply feel the new role's heavier responsibilities upon my shoulder, and I'll sincerely work for the interests of local residents," Jiang said after his election.

Before his role of the government's secretary-general, Jiang had served as vice governor of the Pudong New Area.

Shanghai currently has nine vice mayors in total: Yang Xiong, Tu Guangshao, Tang Dengjie, Zhang Xuebing, Ai Baojun, Shen Jun, Zhao Wen and Jiang Ping.

Also this morning, Hong Hao, former director of the Shanghai World Expo Coordination Bureau, was elected the secretary-general of the Shanghai municipal government.
