Jing'an police busts local drug ring

A drug trafficking gang has been arrested after police raided their house in Jing'an District on October 31 and found nearly 2 kilograms of narcotics.

Pan Hui, 28, and his two accomplices, Zhen Shuang, Pan's 19-year-old girlfriend, and Chen Wei, Pan's 37-year-old cousin, are facing criminal charges by the district prosecutors.

Police also found 180,000 yuan (US$27,000) in cash and a small amount of US and Hong Kong dollars in their house.

Pan, who had served a one-year confinement for petty crimes, allegedly began drug trafficking at the end of last year. In October, he sold his old Ford car to Chen for 80,000 yuan and bought a new SUV.

Chen could only pay 75,000 yuan, so he began helping Pan to traffic drugs to pay the balance.

Zhen met Pan at a local KTV bar and said she helped him hide the drugs because she loved him and bought things for herself with illegal earnings.

Prosecutors said Pan started out as a small-time trafficker, but grew bolder as profits increased.

Anyone who carries more than 1 kilogram of narcotics can be sentenced to 15 years in prison up to death penalty, and anyone who harbors a drug trafficker faces jail terms of up to three years, according to China's Criminal Law.
