KTV cashier glassed on date gone wrong
A MAN was arrested yesterday for allegedly blinding a KTV cashier in one eye after his girlfriend was mistaken for a prostitute.
Shan Xueshi, a Shandong Province native, was charged with assault by Minhang District prosecutors.
Shan took his girlfriend, Huang Yana, to a karaoke bar on Jindu Road on February 14 to celebrate Valentine's Day. They finished singing at midnight and went to the cashier to pay.
When Shan went to the bathroom, Shao Haicui, a KTV assistant manager, called Huang "xiao jie" and asked her whether she were on duty. "Xiao jie" in Chinese is an address for young ladies similar to "miss" in English but it is also sometimes used to address prostitutes.
Huang took this as an insult and Shao apologized, prosecutors said. Shan learned what happened when he came out of the bathroom and slapped Shao in the face.
Prosecutors allege he then threw a glass ashtray at her but it missed and hit cashier Lu Yanshan in the left eye.
Lu's left eyeball was damaged and had to be removed by doctors.
A prosecutor surnamed Peng said Shan was charged with assault because his intention was to injure Shao even though he hit a bystander.
