Keeping clean in heat

FOURTEEN popular pavilions will improve sanitary conditions in waiting areas as the weather gets hotter. New measures have been taken already at Saudi Arabia, France, Germany and Japan pavilions and will start soon at another 10.

Shanghai Environmental Industry Co Ltd said it would increase the number of litter bins in waiting areas.

For example, another 56 litter bins will be installed around the Saudi Arabia Pavilion.

More cleaning machines will also be used to improve the efficiency and hoses will be used to wash greasy roads outside pavilions every three to six days.

Officials said they are battling the tendency of some visitors who eat lunch during queuing and throw away food packs randomly and children urinating in the open.

Visitors to the Expo site produce a daily average of about 140 tons of waste.

When the numbers are high, such as during the three-day Dragon Boat Festival holiday, the daily waste volume reached nearly 170 tons, about half the waste levels of downtown Shanghai.
