Kidnap, beating suspect arrested

LOCAL prosecutors yesterday approved the arrest of a suspect accused of injuring and abducting a man to get 180,000 yuan (US$27,937) back after losing the money in a poker game with him.

The suspect, who went by the pseudonym Yang Wei, had been on the run for four years after his accomplices were caught by police at the abduction scene in 2007, the Minhang District Prosecutors' Office said.

Yang lost the money when gambling in a poker room in Minhang's Qibao area in September 2007. He suspected the banker, with a pseudonym of Li Rong, had cheated him.

So Yang called eight friends to help him beat Li. They called Li's wife, demanding 180,000 yuan or they would kill him.

Li's wife had only 30,000 yuan. So Yang forced Li to write a 150,000-yuan IOU note and had his accomplices take Li to his home to get the money.

But, after being held by the men for 15 hours, Li managed to escape. He jumped out of the car, and the accomplices were caught by the police as they reached the house.

Yang was caught by police recently. His accomplices were sentenced to jail years ago.
