Kidnapped toddler rescued 11 hours later
AN 11-month girl has been rescued by police 11 hours after she was taken hostage, police said yesterday.
The infant was not harmed in the rescue on Monday afternoon and all the three suspects were caught for alleged kidnap, burglary and extortion, according to the Pudong New Area police.
The case is still being investigated.
The girl was kidnapped early Monday morning from the Zhuxi residential area in Zhuqiao Town, police said.
The three masked men broke into the family's house with knives after midnight, taking 70,000 yuan (US$10,250) in cash and jewelry and the little girl as a hostage, police said.
"I heard some noise (from that house) but I didn't get up because of the cold," a neighbor said.
The family of the girl, who were not identified, was then asked for 150,000 yuan ransom for their daughter back, police said. The family then called police.
The girl lives with her grandparents in the house while her parents usually live downtown, neighbors said.
Distinguished from the other houses in the area, the house had bronze fences, and neighbors said luxury cars such as Mercedes-Benzes and BMWs were always seen at the house.
"The grandpa said one of the suspects tried to keep his voice down but was still recognized as a native," officer Du Chaofeng said yesterday. "The suspect must be familiar with the family."
Police targeted a man named Wang as a suspect. He was a friend of the family and a drug addict, the police said.
Wang and his two accomplices were caught about 3:50pm in a rented apartment in Pudong's Huinan Town.
