Kids have hands-on science fun at museum

BETWEEN now and Sunday, children aged 6 to 12 can go to Shanghai Science and Technology Museum to have fun with chemistry and learn about natural science through hands-on experiments for free.

Sponsored by BASF chemical company, children can do three experiments inspired by chemistry in everyday life under the direction of volunteers.

They are an ultraviolet experiment to teach children how to protect themselves from skin damage caused by UV light; a "red sock" experiment that shows how chemicals can keep dye from bleeding out of clothes, and a water storage experiment that demonstrates the water-storage capacity of sandy soil.

"We hope that hands-on experiments will not only enrich children's summers but also encourage them to discover the beauty of chemistry and build environmental awareness," said Jin Jianmin, vice director of the Shanghai Science & Technology Museum.
