Kite string blacks out parts of downtown
PARTS of the city's downtown area were hit by a brief blackout yesterday after a flying kite's string wrapped around three high-tension wires in the Pudong New Area.
The electricity department said the problem was quickly solved and service resumed. But some people reported being stuck in dark elevators.
The Shanghai Electric Power Co, the city's power supplier, said three 220-kilovolt electrical wires in Pudong short-circuited after a kite managed to gets its string wrapped around them about 10:45am. That led to a later short circuit of the wires.
The accident later caused a voltage fluctuation in Pudong's busy Lujiazui and Zhangjiang areas and around Puxi's Yuyuan Garden and Nanjing Road W., the company said.
The glitch did not cause a massive failure of the power grid and the supply was resumed at 1:36pm after emergency work finished, the company said.
It was unclear how many buildings were affected.
For those who were trapped inside elevators, the experience was an unhappy one.
An office worker surnamed Fei said online that she was riding an elevator when it came to a halt with lights out on the 30th floor in the building in Jing'an District.
"Of course we were nervous," she said, adding that the woman beside almost collapsed.
"As we push the emergency button, the voice from the other side of the phone told us everything was fine and assured the safety," the office worker said.
