Knifeman stabs 5 officers

A MAN was detained last night after allegedly stabbing three police officers and two assistants while being questioned earlier in the city's Yangpu District, police said.

The man, surnamed Yu, is a suspect in a murder case six years ago, police said.

All the five injured officers, who suffered wounds to their chests and abdomens, had surgery last night in Yangpu District Central Hospital.

Their conditions were stable, said police.

The stabbing attacks took place at about 6:40pm near the intersection of Xuchang Road and Huimin Road. Police said Yu seemed uneasy when he saw the officers, which aroused their suspicions.

While being questioned, Yu refused to answer or identify himself, police said. When the officers decided to take him back to the police station for further inquiries, he pulled out a knife and fled into the darkness.

During the pursuit that followed, the five officers were stabbed by Yu, police said.

Yu was later shown to be a suspect in a murder in Haiyang City, Shandong Province, in June 2004, in which a pregnant woman was killed, police claimed.

The officers were rushed to hospital at 7pm. Two had more serious wounds to the chest and waist.

The case was still under investigation by last night.
