'Kobitos' anniversary exhibition kicks off at city skyscraper

AN exhibition centering on a popular Japanese cartoon character in the city began today at the Shanghai World Financial Center.

Entitled the “10th Anniversary of Kobitos,” the exhibition is being held at observatory floors on the building’s 94th, 97th and 100th floors through September 8.

Displays on the 423-meter Sky Arena 94 include a 2-meter-tall sculpture of the pink Kobito, a peach-like character which is famous for its ugly image but the lovely appearance is said to have curative effects to bad mood.

Kobitos was created by the Japanese cartoonist Toshitaka Nabata in the Illustrated Book of Kobitos that was first published in 2006 in Japan. In the book, a boy finds the mysterious creature that is neither a plant nor a bug.

The exhibition has over 60 original handmade clay sculptures from the creator. Many animation films and multimedia installations about the character are also displayed on the 94th floor.
