LED lights can spur plant growth and heal wounds
IN addition to building and road lighting, light-emitting diodes (LED) technology has also been used to speed up plant growth and wound healing as well as in skin care.
A greenhouse farm is using LED lighting to stimulate growth of vegetables and herbs in soil-free cultivation in Shanghai Sunqiao Modern Agriculture Development Zone, scientists told an international forum on solid-state lighting technology held in the city today.
The 200-square-meter greenhouse is growing more than ten types of plants including lettuce, tomato and ginseng. "The growth period has been greatly shortened since the greenhouse can offer the best humidity, temperature and lighting which is the most difficult," said Li Shuzhi from Shanghai Research Center of Engineering and Technology for Solid-State Lighting.
"The growth period of lettuce is shortened from 52-60 days to 20 days now after we created the best living environment for plants."
