Lake to get flood defense
A NEW flood-defense levee is to be built close to Dianshan Lake in Qingpu District, the city government said yesterday.
The development project will also include the creation of three wetlands inside the levee to improve the natural environment of the area, the publicity department said on its official microblog.
The new barrier will run from Dianpu River to the border with Jiangsu Province, the Qingpu water authority said.
“The lake is prone to flooding when there is heavy rain, and the original levee has been in need of repair since being badly damaged by Typhoon Haikui in 2012,” an official with the authority said.
Because of its location in a valley, the lake is at risk of flooding from both Taihu Lake and the Huangpu River, the official said.
As well as providing a flood defense, the ecological communities created by the wetlands will help to improve the water quality of the lake, he said.
