Landlord 'killed in neighbor dispute'
A LANDLORD said to be involved in a bitter dispute with nearby residents in the city's Yangpu District was allegedly stabbed to death by a neighbor yesterday afternoon.
The incident took place about 4:15pm in a reclamation depot at 199 Minjing Road, near Minfu Road.
The victim surnamed Xu, 42, was allegedly stabbed twice in the abdomen by her neighbor, police said.
The suspect, surnamed Wu, in his 50s, called the police after the stabbing and turned himself in, witnesses said.
Xu was pronounced dead at the scene.
Neighbors described Wu as "a nice person", and said Xu had built houses illegally along the street. These had been rented out as reclamation depots, bringing noise and safety hazards to the area, they claimed.
"Wu has always been a kind person," neighbors told Shanghai Daily last night. "He did a good thing for us."
Xu owned several houses on Minjing Road, three of which were leased to migrant workers as depots for plastic bottles, paper and steel.
Others were rented out to groups of migrant workers during the World Expo.
Wu, who is poor in health and lived just beside the depots, had complained several times about the illegal construction and leasing.
It is said that in the past Wu had threatened to kill Xu.
"The sound of iron barrels being emptied and scraped was excruciating, and it was just outside of Wu's window," one neighbor said.
Neighbors said Xu had been a bully.
"She may have had a connection in government, for however much we reported the illegal buildings, it was in vain," a neighbor said.
"And if we complained, she would hire thugs to put bricks through our windows."
