Law firm assistant faces fraud charges
AN assistant in a local law firm was arrested yesterday for allegedly swindling more than 100,000 yuan (US$14,620) from six victims.
Prosecutors said the suspect, identified by the surname Peng, looked for targets in Internet chat rooms and told them of investment projects which offered interest of at least 10 percent.
Peng, a 24-year-old from Chongqing Municipality, was hired as a lawyer's assistant after graduation in 2007.
In an online chat with a woman surnamed Hua, she claimed to be a lawyer with the Qianzhi Law Firm, prosecutors said, and that the firm was seeking loans to make short-term financial investments and would pay high interest.
Hua met Peng offline and gave her 10,000 yuan, it is claimed. Peng paid 1,000 yuan interest every month over the next three months, prosecutors said.
In the fourth month Peng told Hua the law firm had a new investment project and Hua gave Peng 20,000 yuan, according to prosecutors.
Peng swindled five other victims in the same way, it is claimed.
Eventually, prosecutors said, Peng wasn't able to pay the interest and one investor reported the matter to police.
