Libraries open, clearing writer from criticism

THREE libraries donated by Shanghai-based writer and cultural scholar Yu Qiuyu have opened in the quake-hit regions of Sichuan Province, quenching criticism that he had not made the donations, Chengdu Business Daily reported.

The debate ensued after Xiao Xialin, an editor with Beijing Literature, wrote an article on his blog challenging the accuracy of Yu's claim that he donated 200,000 yuan (US$29,200) to Sichuan.

Yu, 63, a former head of the Shanghai Theater Academy, was criticized for using the opportunity to gain publicity as no records were available to prove he made the donation.

But the local education told Chengdu Business Daily that Yu had donated 500,000 yuan in books and facilities to the libraries, more than double his original intentions.

Yu didn't appear at the opening ceremony for the libraries last Friday in three schools in Chongqing's Dujiangyan City, the report said.
