Loan shark jailed for illegal fatal detention
A MIDDLE-AGED loan shark has been jailed for 21 months Minhang District People's Court after forcing his borrowers to repay by illegal detaining and beating them, causing one of the victims die, today's Shanghai Morning Post reported.
Li Yuguang illegally detained a woman and her son in their Minhang home for eight days in December last year, beating the woman, the court heard. That led to her committing suicide by slashing her wrists, and she later died in hospital, the report said.
Earlier that year, Li sent others to detain a couple surnamed Xu for a month in their home to demand back a loan of 60,000 yuan (US$8,788). He didn't let the couple go until they signed a letter promising to return the money.
Li also imprisoned another couple surnamed Lu, who acted as guarantors for a man surnamed Shi who fled after borrowing 500,000 yuan. Li asked the Lu family to pay back the loan within three days on November 22. Lu's wife called police, who caught Li January this year.
