Local college succeeds to develop fire-resistant fiber
SHANGHAI Donghua University has developed a fire-resistant fiber which can endure heat of up to 200 degrees Celsius, university officials announced today.
Poly M-phenylene Isophthalamide, as the fiber is called, has been widely used in the world to make outfits for firefighters.
Up to now, Chinese firefighters have been wearing imported outfits. The officials said about 10,000 China-made firefighter outfits have been made with their fiber.
Hu Zuming, professor at the university's College of Material Science and Engineering, said they will continue to raise the fiber's fire-resistant capacity by 100 degrees in two years.
