Local doctor makes a video to identify stroke cases, releases it online
A LOCAL doctor has co-produced a video to identify incidents of strokes with three easy steps and released it online on Tuesday.
The video clip is part of Stroke 1-2-0, a rapid response program for stroke in China, which has higher incidences of stroke than many other countries.
120 is also the country’s medical emergency number.
Doctor Zhao Jing, who heads the neurology department at the Minhang Hospital and Professor Liu Renyu of the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care, Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, worked out on the video along with the medical emergency number 120, to develop the mnemonic tool for rapid stroke recognition.
The number 1 represents “First, look for an uneven face,” 2 represents “Second, examine for arm weakness,” and 0 means “Zero (absence of) clear speech.” In the Chinese version, the pronunciation of zero is “ling,” which is similar to “ting” (hearing).
After the three tests, dial the emergency number 120.
A study in western urban China suggested that only 16.9% of stroke patients knew the initial symptoms of a stroke, and only 18.8% used emergency medical services. About 33% of the stroke cases were not correctly diagnosed by ambulance physicians, it said.
