Local schools compete in Oxford-Cambridge-style boat race

IMITATING the annual boat race between Oxford and Cambridge, Shanghai's two rival schools, Fudan University and Jiao Tong University, held their first dragon boat race yesterday to promote sports among young Chinese.
The competition, dubbed "Epic Rivalry," was organized by the Ministry of Education. It is the first leg of a tournament that will also see a race between Beijing's Tsinghua University and Peking University and top universities in other Chinese cities.
"The competition will extend to secondary and elementary schools in the future," said Liu Peijun, a Ministry of Education official and the deputy director of the tournament organizing committee.
Thousands of university students took part in yesterday's competition in Shanghai Oriental Land resort in Qingpu District, which also included debate, talent show, marathon, triathlon and cycling.
The most eye-catching event is the dragon boat race, which emulates the 158-year-old Oxford-Cambridge boat race.
Fudan won the men's race while Jiao Tong won the women's race. In the mixed race, Jiao Tong beat Fudan by only 1 second.
Due to the rain and slippery road, several students were injured in the competition. The organizer called for ambulance at least five times.
