Locals give back 10,000 yuan drunk threw away

A DRUNKEN man who threw away banknotes worth 10,000 yuan (US$1,608) at an intersection on Saturday morning was shocked to see the money being collected and returned, most of it by two local women.

Residents called police after they saw the drunken man throwing money around at the intersection of Gonghexin and Baode roads about 9:45am on Saturday, police said.

"Is that man throwing money on the street? Perhaps he is getting too rich," said a netizen who posted a photo on Weibo.

Witnesses said the money was blown by the wind and falling all around the intersection. But there were not many cars or people there at the time, witnesses said. People started collecting the money and they immediately returned it to the drunken man, police said. Among them, two middle-aged women collected the most money and turned it in to police.

Police said the man was very drunk and had just collected the money from a bank. His reason for throwing away the money remains a mystery.

On February 3, migrant worker Qin Xiaoliang fell off his scooter in a Shanghai street and cash worth around 17,600 yuan was blown away by the wind after it dropped out of his pocket. Qin watched as passers-by rushed to grab his money. Many kindhearted residents donated money to him and some returned what they picked up.

Qin later donated 14,650 yuan to the Shanghai Charity Fund.
