Locals take to blood donation in big way
Local residents donated blood 359,400 times, providing a total of 501,500 units (200 milliliters equal one unit) last year, when there were 14.86 donors among every 1,000 residents. The amount of blood donated increased by 74.7 percent from 10 years ago, the local health authority revealed ahead of today鈥檚 World Blood Donor Day.
Shanghai now has 60 spots where people can donate blood for 203 local medical facilities in the city.
To make it more convenient for donors and ensure their rights to use blood, the city allows blood donors to apply for blood use through their WeChat account and on the next day both the donor and hospital will receive a blood-use document. The document allows blood donors and their lineal relatives to use blood with favorable policies.
According to Chinese law, blood donors and their lineal relatives get priority on blood use when they undergo medical treatment.
Moreover, donors can now show their digital donor鈥檚 license, check the results of blood test and reserve blood donation through the Suishenban Citizen Cloud, an app of Shanghai鈥檚 one-stop platform for government affairs, which offers residents online access to more than 1,000 public services.
The local health authority yesterday also honored people and facilities with excellent blood donation records.
