Long queues greet issue of Party anniversary coins

LONG queues formed around some banks in Shanghai this morning as people rushed to buy commemorative coins to mark the 90th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China. Many people said they began to line as early as 6am.

Today is the launch of the two coins, one with a face value of 5 yuan (77 US cents), and the other with a value of 1 yuan.

In a China Construction Bank outlet on Zhiyuan Road, Zhabei District, the newly minted commemorative coins were sold out in half an hour after the office opened.

Each customer can only buy one coin of each kind. A total of 60 million 5-yuan coins and 30 million 1-yuan coins will be issued across the country, which had never had a coin with a face value of more than 1 yuan.
