Look over your shoulder when sightseeing at the Bund

TOURISTS are warned of thefts when they enjoy waterfront views on the Bund promenade as four thieves were caught there recently, the Huangpu District prosecutors said today.

They said the thieves preyed on tourists who put their bags unattended on benches while playing with their mobile phones or listening to music.

After receiving numerous reports from theft victims at the Bund, police used surveillance camera to monitor the area and found one suspect, a pregnant woman, and seized two mobile phones from her.

The woman surnamed Zou, 22, had a history of theft, having spent four months in criminal detention in 2006 and seven months in jail in 2007. She told prosecutors that she decided to steal again after she became pregnant and failed to find a job.

In a separate case, three thieves were caught on the spot for stealing a bag from a couple sitting along the Bund, the prosecutors said.
