Lotus and water lily exhibition to open

The seventh Shanghai lotus and water lily exhibition will open at Guyi Garden in Jiading District on Friday.

It will feature more than 600 varieties including some new, rare and award-winning specimens.

The main display area showcases nearly 1,000 pots of lotuses of about 300 varieties with different colors and petal shapes. Some autumn and hybrid lotuses as well as lotuses from overseas countries such as Japan and the United States will also be on display in the area. The highlight is a brilliant red lotus.

There is also a rare lotus with six colors — red, pink, green, yellow, brown and white. The exhibition will run through July 28.

Cultural activities such as lotus-related exhibitions of porcelain, calligraphy and painting, stamps, embroidery and hanfu (a traditional Han Chinese dress), summer camps and lectures will also be hosted during the exhibition.

And there will be performances of dances, Kunqu Opera, pingtan (musical storytelling) and guqin (Chinese zither).

A lotus feast, featuring food made from lotus roots and lotuses, will be served.

Guyi Garden is a classical Jiangnan-style garden dating back to the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). Jiangnan refers to the region south of the lowers reaches of the Yangtze River.
