Love is in the air during Singles' Day
A MASSIVE dating party which was to be held on Metro Line 11 on Singles' Day was canceled due to safety concerns as the number of participants far exceeded the organizer's expectations.
They thought around 100 people would attend the party, where people would take part in match-making activities on Line 11 on November 11.
They believe the number "1" stands for "single," and chose the subway as the venue for a party because they believe trains are a place where many love stories begin.
However, more than 350 local singles sent applications to attend the event after the organizer placed information about the party on the Internet, said one of the organizers, surnamed Hu, an editor of a local online community website.
She said as the number of participants grew, they thought about renting a whole train for the activity, but had to abandon the whole thing due to safety concerns.
"We never thought so many people would show enthusiasm for train dating," said Hu, "We are now planning new match-making activities for December 12."
Other parties and activities for singles were being held across the city - two groups of young people in their 20s, five men and five ladies, gathered at People's Park yesterday to plant trees as part of their dating party.
But the activity was not very successful, as the men and women were still divided into two groups, with the men sitting on the grass, while the women planted the trees.
"It's a shame," said one of the organizers, surnamed Wang, "Planting trees should be a good way to spend a date, but we ended up doing all the?work."
On the popular website, douban.com, a party was planned on Nanjing Road W., with a strict rule: women have to wear silk stockings while men should dress formally.
