Lunch costs rise to 18.9 yuan
The average lunch cost for office workers is 18.9 yuan (US$2.78), according to a new survey of nearly 30,000 white-collar workers in Shanghai.
Office workers in Hongqiao area spend most on their lunch, with an average of 26.8 yuan, because the area is home to Japanese or Korean restaurants, the survey found.
Those in Lujiazui area spend the least time at lunch with an average less than 28 minutes, Oriental Morning Post reported today.
Office workers voluntarily cut their lunch breaks from an hour because of the financial crisis, the survey said. Some employees only take biscuits or bread to eat during lunchtime meetings. About a third of Lujiazui employees chose fast food for lunch.
More than half the office workers along Huaihai Road were forced to eat lunch outside as their bosses don't like the smell of food in the office, according to the survey carried out by Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
