Main Xinjian Road Tunnel structure completed
THE main structure of the underground Xinjian Road Tunnel was completed today after 10 months of drilling.
The tunnel, between the Dalian Road Tunnel to the north and the Yan'an Road Tunnel to the south, links Xinjian Road in Puxi with Yincheng Road in Pudong.
It is due to open next year before the World Expo starts in May.
Digging of the 2,254-meter-long tunnel began last August from the eastern passage on the Pudong side. The drilling on the western passage started in December.
When completed, the tunnel will be key to the Bund's underground traffic network. Together with the Renmin Road Tunnel, which is also under way, the Xinjian Road Tunnel will connect underground traffic and access the central part of the Bund, the shipping-trade center at the Northern Bund and the Lujiazui financial zone.
The tunnel will alleviate traffic congestion in the Northern Bund area and reduce the number of vehicles using the Yan'an Road E. Tunnel.
The most difficult part of the drilling was not underwater but the coastal area along the Huangpu River, according to workers from Shanghai Tunnel Engineering Co Ltd.
Technicians had to drill through a complex of underground electrical wires, telecom cables and sewage pipes on the Pudong side.
On the Puxi side, technicians had removed more than 100 30-meter wooden piers by last month which had been laid underwater for the old port which has been replaced by the Shanghai International Cruise Terminal.
Technicians are continuing the construction with road works and interior decorating in the tunnel, Zhang Rencai, project manager with Shanghai Tunnel Engineering Co Ltd, said.
