DESIGNS on rival

The Brewster Wall Covering Co yesterday won a lawsuit against the Venecia Wallpaper Co. The Shanghai and Zhejiang branch of Venecia copied the design of Brewster's products, said Shanghai Pudong New Area People's Court. The investigation found that a man surnamed Yu, originally deputy general manager for Brewster, quit to join Venecia. Venecia was told to stop using Brewster designs and pay 260,000 yuan (US$38,805) compensation. Yu was told to pay 120,000 yuan compensation.

Pirate car parts

A MAN was detained last month for wholesaling counterfeit vehicle components in a market in Jiading District, police said. The man, surnamed Wang, alledgedly started selling fake Volkswagen parts in 2005, and by March 30, when he was caught, 310,000 fake components had been sold with a value of 25 million yuan (US$3.8 million). More than 3,600 pirated components were found in Wang's warehouse, according to police.

Steel steal

Three men were arrested in Wuxi, Jiangsu Province, for wholesaling pirate steel products with a value of 20 million yuan (US$3 million). Baoshan District police said the products were manufactured in Zhangjiagang, Jiangsu Province, but sold as products of Bao Steel, a famous Shanghai group.

Infant food frauds

Shanghai Higher People's Court yesterday said that Shantou Yapei, a company based in Guangdong Province, has been sentenced to pay 500,000 yuan (US$74,626) in compensation to Abbott Laboratories for using the logo "ZM Yapei" - "Yapei" is the Chinese translation for Abbott - on their infant food products.
