Maker of fake Avastin faces criminal probe

THE State Food and Drug Administration and Shanghai Public Security Bureau are investigating a Beijing pharmaceutical company for making fake Avastin, which caused eye infection in 61 patients at Shanghai No. 1 People's Hospital last month. Shanghai Health Bureau said today the hospital was also involved in the scandal.
Avastin is mainly used to treat colon cancer but its key component also has effects on some eye problems.
Roche, the producer of Avastin, said the medicine is only approved for colon cancer treatment in the mainland. In the United States, it is allowed to treat five kinds of cancer and not approved for eye treatment.
