Man, 20, drowns trying to escape motorcycle attack

A young man drowned after jumping into a river in Minhang District to escape a motorcycle attack early yesterday.

The 20-year-old victim, surnamed Zhang from Anhui Province, and three friends were attacked by two men on a motorcycle wielding metal bars after a quarrel turned violent, local police said.

Villagers in Jixi Village, who witnessed the incident, said they were woken up by a loud noise and saw two men on a motorcycle with iron bars chasing four young men at about 2am yesterday morning.

The four young men ran into a dead end and had to jump into a river nearby to escape. They tried to swim across the river, but the two men on the motorcycle reached the other side via a bridge in advance.

When they were forced to swim back, one of the men called for help and gradually sank into the river. Seeing that the situation was getting serious, the two motorcyclists sped away.

The other three men couldn't find their friend and called the police. The victim's body was retrieved at about 7am.

The police said they were investigating the case and looking for the two men on the motorcycle.
