Man, 63, detainedin sex case
A MAN aged 63 has been detained for the alleged rape of a mentally handicapped young woman in Pudong New Area.
The suspect, surnamed Chen, was taken into custody after a neighbor called police when Chen was seen attempting to coax the woman into his apartment last week.
The neighbor grew suspicious of Chen after seeing him lead the woman, 26, into his apartment several times before.
"There were rumors about their unusual relationship," the resident said.
About 10am last Wednesday, the resident saw the woman following Chen into his apartment on Yanqiao Road and called police.
He stressed to police that the woman was incapable of protecting herself.
Security guards of the complex agreed with the neighbor's suspicions as they said Chen and the woman had taken free condoms from the family-planning office near the gate of the block.
"The woman went to take condoms three to four times, and Chen did once," said a security guard.
Chen has lived alone since his wife died three years ago, according to the residential committee of the complex.
The alleged victim moved there three years ago.
According to committee members, the two may have had a sexual relationship for quite some time as the woman "has a record of abortion."
Chen is a warmhearted guy, according to another neighbor surnamed Yan. "He always smiles and asks others if they need help," she said.
Yan said she had never seen the two together.
Under China's law, Chen will be charged with rape if it is established they had sex and the woman is deemed mentally challenged and incapable of protecting herself.
The rape charge applies regardless of whether the victim consented to sex.
