Man, 79, found dead after week
THE body of a 79-year-old man who lived alone was discovered on Saturday more than a week after he died at his home in Yangpu District.
His body was found when a neighbor called police after noticing a bad smell from his apartment at Fengcheng Residential Area on Yanji Road W, a neighbor told Shanghai Daily yesterday.
The man surnamed Cui had lived there for about five years and had no family, said neighbor Qin Yulin.
"I couldn't believe it when I heard the news," she said. "He was always in good health."
Qin said the retired man got up early every day and liked to read newspapers, especially those in English.
Cui had never married, had no children, and he had no brothers or sisters, she said. He must have been dead for a while because nobody had seen him for about a week, she added.
She blamed the neighborhood committee for failing to visit him. "He was a typical solitary senior resident who had lived here for years but the committee never cared about him," Qin said.
The building has undergone recent renovations and everybody was busy redecorating their own apartments, she said.
On May 16, a corpse was found at her home in the Jinguang residential complex in the Pudong New Area. Witnesses said the woman surnamed Hu in her 60s was just a skeleton when a plumber found her. She had lived alone since her husband died in 2003.
Shanghai has 188,000 senior citizens who live alone, latest statistics show.
