Man accused of smuggling 300 cameras
A MAN has been detained for allegedly smuggling more than 300 secondhand cameras and other photographic equipment made by prominent firms such as Canon, Olympus and Nikon from Japan to Shanghai, Customs police said today.
The suspect, surnamed Liang, is said to have forged the documents and seals of other companies to smuggle the photographic equipment including video cameras, still cameras, lenses and accessories, police said.
The shipment, declared to be ball bearings, also contained some brand new electronic appliances such as rice cookers and vacuum cups.
Customs police began to monitor Liang after they seized a batch of shoe polishers from the United States that had been declared to be ball bearings earlier this month.
