Man arrested over phishing scam

A man was arrested after he stole nearly 20,000 yuan (US$3,220) from three bank accounts in a phishing scam, Songjiang District People's Procuratorate said today.

Prosecutors said the man sent text messages sent from a number that appeared as China Mobile's service hotline 10086, telling the victims to log on to a website and redeem gifts with their points.

According to prosecutors, one of the victims, surnamed Cai, received a call from Gome Electrical Appliances on December 2 and was asked if she had purchased anything in their online store. Cai checked her bank records immediately and found 15,000 yuan was missing.

Similar incidents occurred to Fan and Chen, who both found several thousand yuan missing from their accounts, prosecutors said.

They reported to police. After an investigation of the phishing website, police traced a man, surnamed Zhao as the main suspect. Police said they are still searching for Zhao's accomplices.

Zhao told police that he and his accomplices used an illegal database to send nearby cellphone users fake China Mobile messages with a link connecting to a Trojan horse virus.
