Man charged after car kills 3
A drunken driver who allegedly killed three in a road collision has been arrested and charged with dangerous driving, Pudong New Area prosecutors said yesterday.
The suspect, surnamed Huang, rear-ended a taxi on Chuanzhan Road near Nanliu Road about 3pm on February 12. He did not stop but instead fled, prosecutors said.
The cab driver, surnamed Shen, was alleged to chase Huang along Nanliu Road to near Zhouzhu Road, where Huang was forced to stop by traffic at a red light. Prosecutors said Shen got out of the cab and tried to stop Huang but the drunken driver drove straight into the cabbie.
Huang accelerated while Shen, who was stuck on the engine hood, tried to keep himself balanced. The cabbie was crushed to death when Huang's car hit a Chery QQ car, which then rear-ended a Kia sedan, prosecutors said.
The fuel tank of the Chery cracked, causing a fire that burned two people in the car to death.
Huang told prosecutors he was too drunk to remember what he had done and admitted having drunk liquor before the accident. A blood test showed the alcohol content in Huang's blood reached 2.12 milligrams per milliliter, more than 2 1/2 times the limit of 0.8mg/ml for drunk driving.
