Man charged in brutal restaurant killing
HUANGPU District prosecutors yesterday approved the arrest of a man charged with brutally stabbing his girlfriend to death over their love affair in a restaurant at People's Square.
The suspect, surnamed Tang, allegedly stabbed 37-year-old Chen Haihua more than 30 times when they were drinking at the A-Ka Cafe & Restaurant in the underground D-Mall at People's Square about 3:30pm on August 15. Chen, who suffered repeated stabs on the neck, chest, belly and back, was pronounced dead after being sent to the nearby Changzheng Hospital.
Prosecutors said Tang, 38, was divorced and lived with his son in a rural village in Anhui Province while Chen, from Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, worked for a tourism company in Shanghai.
The two got to know each other through a website and started a relationship in June last year. On August 7 this year, Chen sent Tang a text message, saying that she had a new boyfriend in Shanghai and wanted to break up with him.
To try to save the relationship, Tang took a train from his home to Shanghai on August 14. But Chen insisted on breaking up and told Tang that she was in fact married.
Tang became enraged and took out a knife to stab her, prosecutors said, adding that he did not stop stabbing until he injured his own hands.
"I cannot hold my emotions when she refused to hug me for a last time," Tang told prosecutors.
Tang didn't leave the scene and was detained by police immediately.
