Man charged with killing his lover and cutting up the body
A MAN who killed his former mistress, dismembered her body and dumped the remains in the river, has been charged with robbery, Qingpu District prosecutors said.
Wang Jin, 42, a Jiangsu Province native, has been charged with robbery as his initial intention was theft. But he faces the death penalty if convicted because the victim died, prosecutors said.
Wang allegedly killed the woman in order to steal her gold jewelry so he could pay off his gambling debts.
Wang worked in an agricultural market in Qingpu for many years and lived an ordinary life with his family.
But in 2005, he and Li Lan, a married woman selling bean curd in the market, became lovers.
However, they became estranged last year after Wang's addiction to gambling got out of hand.
Facing more and more creditors, Wang was anxious to raise money. On September 8, Wang prepared a hammer and a kitchen knife and asked Li to visit him, prosecutors said. Wang asked to borrow 10,000 yuan (US$1,463) but was refused. He then persuaded Li to lie on the bed with the excuse of giving her a massage.
When Li was lying on the bed, Wang hit her over the head with the hammer, prosecutors said. Then, it is alleged, he took off her jewelry, cut the body up with the kitchen knife and put the parts into three bags. He carried the bags to a bridge in Zhujiajiao Town, Qingpu District, added pieces of concrete to weigh them down and threw them in the river, prosecutors alleged.
The next day Wang took Li's gold necklace and bracelet to a store and asked the store to make a bigger bracelet with the two items. He then sold it for more than 9,000 yuan to pay his debts, prosecutors said.
After a couple of weeks, Wang fled to Wuxi in Jiangsu Province.
The body parts were found by a river course cleaner on November 3 and the police managed to arrest Wang the following day.
