Man charged with murder attempt in cop attack

PUDONG New Area prosecutors yesterday approved attempted murder charges against a man who allegedly beat a local policeman, resulting in serious injuries.
The suspect, surnamed Yuan, was said to have drunk a lot alcohol with his four friends before the five attacked three strangers without provocation with iron rods and steel tubes on Qishan Road in the Pudong New Area on the night of December 13.
Prosecutors said the five chased the three to a restaurant, where they hit another victim surnamed Hong and smashed two windows.
Police rushed to the scene, trying to stop Yuan and his accomplices. But Yuan beat a police officer on the waist and head, causing severe injuries that threatened the officer's life, authorities said.
The officer suffered a fractured skull but was in stable condition in the hospital, prosecutors said.
All five attackers were detained.
In addition to Yuan, three were arrested and charged with causing a disturbance while the fifth was not charged because he was under 18.
