Man charged with murdering his friend
A MAN has been charged with murder after he killed a friend over an unpaid debt, prosecutors said yesterday.
Wang Lei, a Zhejiang Province native, formed a software company in Shanghai after graduating from a university in southwest China.
He met the victim surnamed Jiang, who was in the computer hardware business, online in 2004 and they became good friends.
Jiang asked to borrow 100,000 yuan (US$14,771) from Wang in February 2005, saying his company needed capital to buy equipment. Wang agreed.
Jiang didn't pay back the debt and continued to borrow more money using different excuses. He owed Wang a total of 235,000 yuan.
Wang filed a lawsuit in October 2005 and asked the court to enforce the verdict after he won. But judges found that Jiang had no property that could be used to pay the debt.
Wang hired a debt collection firm to help. Still, he received nothing.
Meanwhile, his company had to be shut down because he had used most of his time to retrieve the debt. Wang returned to his hometown in 2008.
He didn't contact Jiang for a long period because he thought his former friend would be less alert this way, he told prosecutors of the Shanghai No. 2 Intermediate Prosecutors' Office.
Wang returned to Shanghai in March and planned to kill Jiang if the debt wasn't paid. He also decided to commit suicide after the killing.
"I have lost a lot in the four years trying to recover the debt," Wang allegedly told prosecutors. "I missed the chance to buy an apartment when the price was low. I didn't marry the woman I liked because I didn't have enough money."
Wang found Jiang at his home on March 28. Jiang said he had no money but that he would pay the debt if he did. Seeing a big gold necklace on Jiang's neck, Wang allegedly went into a rage and stabbed his former friend.
Prosecutors said Wang continued to stab him in the neck. Wang later tried to commit suicide but was stopped by police arriving at the scene.
Jiang died in hospital due to excessive blood loss.
