Man convicted of polygamy crime by Pudong court

A man who pretended to be a senior bank executive and had seven children with six women was sentenced to 18 months in prison for polygamy, the Pudong District People's Court said today.
The 47-year-old convict, surnamed Ji, was caught after one of his "wives" discovered he had other women and reported to police.
The prosecutors said Ji married three of the women legally in Shanghai, Beijing and Jiangsu and lived with three other women at the same time. His oldest child is 23 years old while the youngest is only two years old.
"I regret deeply for what I have done and I am so sorry to these women," Ji said in court. He confessed to his crime of polygamy but argued that he didn't want to have children with them, the court heard.
"I married with them only because the children needed a hukou (household registry)," Ji said.
According to China's Criminal Law, polygamy offenders can get jail sentences of up to two years.
