Man detained after 13-year-old found pregnant

A MAN in Pudong New Area has been detained for raping a mentally retarded 13-year-old girl and making her pregnant, today's Xinmin Evening News reported.
The girl came to Shanghai from her hometown in Anhui Province with her parents who ran a grocery.
On June 9, she complained about feeling uncomfortable and her parents took her to a hospital where an examination showed she was four months' pregnant.
The shocked parents told the Pudong police who later detained one of their neighbors after the girl revealed he had had sex with her.
The Xinmin Evening News report described him as a married man in his 40s. His son is a university student.
The man, who runs a motorcycle taxi business, knew the girl's family as he often visited their shop.
The girl is in a Pudong hospital awaiting an abortion.
The man could face serious punishment, lawyer Lian Yanjie of the Xinhua Law Firm said.
In law, a man who has sex with a girl under the age of 14 is guilty of rape if he is aware of the girl's age, he said.
In this case, the man knew very well the girl was retarded and should be severely punished, he added.
