Man dies after suspected drag race crash

AN 18-year-old man died when he lost control of his moped and crashed during a suspected race in Putuo District yesterday.

He was driving very fast on a souped-up moped, racing against six other young men when the accident happened about 1pm yesterday, a witness said.

The victim, a student, was racing south on Jintong Road, near Wuwei Road, when his moped hit a curb. He lost control and crashed. He died at the scene.

His partners called for help after the accident, a witness said.

"They told me they were racing and driving too fast," a witness surnamed Miao said. "They said they asked him to drive slower, but he didn't listen."

They were not wearing helmets or other safety equipment, Miao said.

The other six racers did not get hurt.

A lot of blood was visible on the road and a skid mark stretching about 20 meters could be seen at the crash site.

Putuo District police are still investigating.

Meanwhile, Qingpu District police said they caught 20 youth involved in drag races on Friday night.
