Man dies in fight over gambling

POLICE are hunting several suspects who are believed to have been involved in a deadly fight that left one man dead and three injured on Wednesday in Chongming County.

Police said yesterday that they have caught five suspects and have strengthened checks at transport hubs, ports and highway ramps.

The injured were in stable conditions, police said.

Sources said the fight was caused by a gambling dispute, however this was not confirmed by county police.

The incident happened about 2:40am on Wednesday in a residential community in Chongming's Chengqiao Town, police said.

One injured man, surnamed Yu, said he and the other three were going back to a rented apartment when they were attacked. "Seven or eight men rushed at us waving knives and hammers," said Yu.

Yu fought back and tried to escape outside to get help when the men fled, he said.

A 22-year-old man, surnamed Li, was pronounced dead after police arrived. The others suffered head, back and hand injures.

Yu said the killers may have fought with Li in the past, but he did not know the details. The apartment was rented by Li, said Yu.
