Man gets one-year jail for salon assault

A mentally unstable man who, dissatisfied with his haircut, assaulted the barber and other staff of a hair salon, was sentenced to one year in prison with a one-year reprieve, the Songjiang District People's Court ruled today.
The court heard the suspect, surnamed Xu, had a history of mental illness since 2005 but had stopped taking medicines after he was apparently relieved of the symptoms in 2010.
Prosecutors said Xu went to the hair salon alone last month and got into an dispute with the barber because he was not happy with his new hairstyle.
The argument escalated with Xu and the barber indulging in fisticuffs. When the salon staff tried to separate the two, Xu suddenly hit one of them with a hammer and started smashing things in the parlor, prosecutors said. He also assaulted a girl and didn't stop until police arrived.
Xu was given a one-year reprieve on account of his mental illness. But the court ordered his parents to pay 5,000 yuan (US$809) as compensation for damage to the salon's property.
