Man held after climbing Waibaidu Bridge again
A MIDDLE-AGED man has been taken into custody after he climbed Waibaidu Bridge in Huangpu District yesterday, backing up traffic for hours, police said.
It was the second time the man had climbed the landmark bridge in six days.
Officers said they believe the man surnamed Sun was trying to bring attention to a family dispute. He can be detained for up to 15 days for disturbing social order, police said.
Sun, who is in his 50s, told police that "he climbed the bridge because he wanted to get attention and get the problem solved."
Yesterday's incident happened about 7:30am when Sun was spotted sitting at the top of the bridge that spans Suzhou Creek.
Police officers and firefighters soon closed both lanes on the bridge. An air cushion was set up and officers told him not to take extreme action.
About 9am, Sun climbed down on his own and was taken away by police.
Last Wednesday, Sun, who lives in Changning District, had climbed up the bridge, presumably over the same family dispute.
He climbed down about an hour later and police sent him to community officials for "education."
