Man held after stabbing in Xiamen
A MAN who stabbed four Shanghai tourists at a popular travel destination has been detained, police said yesterday in Xiamen City, Fujian Province.
The tourists were stabbed on Wednesday during an altercation on Gulangyu Island, which is popular among travelers. The conflict started after they asked the assailant to share a bench, Xiamen police said.
Of the four victims, all in their 60s, one woman was seriously injured after she was stabbed in the back. But police added that none of the victims were in critical condition.
Urban management officials who stopped the attack reportedly said they smelled alcohol on the attacker. Witnesses said the four tourists asked the man, who was lying on a bench, to move over to make some room for others. An argument erupted and the man pushed one of the tourists. He then pulled out a knife and stabbed them, according to police.
The attacker is a 47-year-old from Guizhou Province who arrived in Xiamen on Tuesday, police said.
Shanghai Huantian Xidi Travel Agency, which organized the tour, said it helped cover the victims' medical expenses.
