Man held after threatening suicide leap
A MAN will be detained for 10 days after he threatened to jump off the Waibaidu Bridge near the Bund yesterday, Shanghai police said.
The incident backed up traffic in the area during the morning rush hour, officers said.
The middle-aged man was seen tossing leaflets from the top of the bridge spanning Suzhou Creek near the Bund. Witnesses said the leaflets described a medical dispute with a hospital.
Police safely removed the man from the bridge and took him away at 7:45am.
Officers did not disclose why he was threatening suicide.
The man was detained for disturbing public order and police said traffic returned to normal in the area about 8am.
The century-old Waibaidu Bridge is a Shanghai icon and is frequently used in film and TV shoots. But it has long attracted people who want to end their lives.
The latest suicide attempt occurred on March 6. A woman tried to jump off the bridge, but was stopped by two passers-by.
