A MAN has been arrested for assault after he stabbed and killed another man during a fight which occurred when he got into an argument in a restaurant, said Huangpu District prosecutor's office yesterday.

The stabbing happened at midnight on September 19, when the suspect, Zhou Wen, and five friends were in a restaurant in Huangpu, prosecutors said.

Zhou complained to the victim, surnamed Chen, and Chen's friends, saying their table right beside Zhou's was too noisy.

Prosecutors said Chen was not happy about the complaint and started an argument with Zhou, which later turned into to a fight in which all of their friends, 16 in total, were involved.

During the fight, Chen hit Zhou in the head with a beer bottle, Zhou then pulled out a 30-centimeter-long knife, cut Chen's head and chest, and finally stabbed him in the back. After the knife was taken off him by Chen's friends, Zhou hit another victim, surnamed Wang, in the left ear with a beer bottle.

Police arrived later and controlled the scene - Chen was taken to hospital, but was pronounced dead on arrival due to loss of blood, said the prosecutors.
